Tobago is the pretty sister island to Trinidad. Both were originally connected by land bridge to the mainland of Venezuela so they share the landscape, flora and fauna. The fishing town of Parlatuvier, shown above, presents the iconic image of Tobagonian serenity.

Tobago is of volcanic origin, hilly with a mountainous spine called the Main Ridge. The main tourist resorts are in the southwest area around Pigeon Point where there are large expanses of sand.

Scarborough is the economic and cultural center of Tobago. It was the capital in 1769 before it was unified with Trinidad.

Tobago has the remains of 5 forts dating from the 1500s as the colony changed hands over 30 times, mostly between the English and French, but also Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Fort King George built by the British in the 1770s offers a museum, preserved barracks, lighthouse and cannons, and panoramic views of Scarborough.

Englishman's Bay is a secluded beach on the leeward coast of Tobago between Castara and Parlatuvier, with a classic crescent shape between two heavily forested headlands.

Stonehaven Bay and Mount Irvine Bay on the Atlantic Coast are typical of caramel sand and green waters for which Tobago is known.

Argyle Falls, Tabago's highest waterfall, cascades down three levels to a pool where people take refreshing swims.

Tropical fruits include bananas, breadfruit, mango, papaya, plantain, chenet, cocorite, dongs, guava, jackfruit, pomerac and sapodilla.

The Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve, a UNESCO heritage site, is the oldest protected conservation area in the Western hemisphere recognized for its unique species of flora and fauna.

A variety of trails access views of rich tropical foliage of palms and the orange-blossoming tree called the "flamboyant."

A typical Tobagonian lunch consists of kingfish, rice and beans, and "provision" salad, a staple food from the days of slavery comprised of breadfruit, taro and banana.

Trinidad and Tobago have large elaborate Carnival celebrations of masquerades and band parades; Trinidad's is in February and Tobago's in October.
